06/09/2008 - Looking back: Angell's divine intervention
The Magpies were a side in need of some divine intervention, and it fittingly came from a man named Angell: Brett Angell.
It was a debut performance that ranked among the finest in the club's history, with Angell hitting a memorable hat-trick.
He rightly stole all of the headlines, but he was not alone in inspiring Notts to their biggest victory of the season.
Three of the goals came in a blistering opening eight minutes, with Angell making a dream start after only 40 seconds.
Richard Holmes' cross from the right was flicked on by Mark Stallard and Angell reacted to beat the onrushing Mark Ovendale from close range.
Ian Richardson then sent a glancing header past Ovendale from Clayton Blackmore's corner to double the Magpies' early advantage, and Angell added his second with a powerful finish from ten yards.
Notts' fans were singing "we want four" before the ten-minute mark.
Leading scorer Stallard did make it four in the closing minutes of the first half, racing on to a pass from Angell to register his tenth of the season.
Magpies' keeper Darren Ward was only called into action in the final minute of the first half, clawing out a long-range effort from Steve Robinson.
Angell completed his hat-trick just before the hour mark, heading home Shaun Murray's measured cross from the left.
It could have been even more. Notts were in rampant form. Murray and Blackmore both tested Ovendale from long-range, and Richard Holmes fired just over.
John O'Neill beat Ward with a header from a free-kick in the closing minutes.
But it was Angell's day. And when he made way for substitute Alex Dyer in the 75th minute, a deafening chant of "sign him up, sign him up" reverberated around Meadow Lane.
